U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Airgun Day 1 Report

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (December 3, 2011)

Sergeant First Class Daryl Szarenski (Seale, Ala.) is tearing up the field at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Airgun in Anniston, Ala.  Szarenski, a member of the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), broke a USA Shooting (USAS) National Record in Men’s 10m Air Pistol qualification.  Szarenski shot an impressive 590 out of a possible 600 match points in the first day of qualification.  The former record, 589 points set by Reuben Hafter, has been in place since 1990.  Szarenski continued to excel with the highest final of 101.8 points in the final for another new national record (with finals) of 691.8 total points.  At the end of the day, Szarenski took a commanding 14 point lead on the competition.   Brian Beaman (Selby, S.D.) i s in second place with 578 qualification points and 99.8 points in the final for 677.8 total points.  Will Brown (Twins Falls, Ida.) didn’t give Beaman any room to breathe in the scores as he fired 577 match points and 100.2 points in the final for a total of 677.2 points—just six-tenths of a point behind.  The rest of the finals field was spread out only over six points. 

Corporal Matt Rawlings (Wharton, Texas) dropped only two points in qualification to score 598 match points in Men’s 10m Air Rifle.  Rawlings, who was heavily favored to lead the pack, continued to charge ahead with 104.2 points in the final for 702.2 total points.  Matt Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.) brought his experience and tenacity to the line as he fired 595 match points and the highest final of 104.6 points.  He is only 2.6 points behind Rawlings and in good position to continue his run for a second Olympic berth.  Jonathan Hall (Carrollton, Ga.) and Connor Davis (Shelbyville, Ky.) were neck-and-neck after qualification at 594 match points.  Hall surged ahead with 103.3 points in the final for 697.3 total points, while Davis finished with 696.6 total points. 

Emily Caruso (Fairfield, Conn.) set the standard today with an impressive 399 match points in Womens’ 10m Air Rifle.  Caruso brought that same focus and determination to the finals, scoring a solid 104 points for 503 total points.  Four points behind Caruso is Sarah Scherer (Worburn, Mass.) with 395 match points.  Scherer separated herself from the  competition in the final with 104 match points for 499 total points.  Jamie (Beyerle) Gray (Lebanon, Pa.) is in third place with 396 match points and 102.8 points in the final for a total of 498.8 points. 

In Women’s 10m Air Pistol, Sandra Uptagrafft led the field with 381 match points.  Uptagrafft fired 97.5 points in the final for a total of 478.5 points.  Darian Shenk (Annville, Pa.) is in the second position with 373 match points and 98 points in the final for an even 471 total points.  Courtney Anthony (Lexington, Neb.) is right behind Shenk with 375 match points and 95.8 points in the final for a total of 470.8 total points.
