ISSF World Cup Sydney: Rhode and Connor Steal the Show

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 30, 2011)

The USA Shooting Team continues to up its medal count at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Sydney with an additional two medals in Women’s Skeet. Four-time Olympic medalist Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.) shot a solid qualification score of 72 out of 75 targets. Tied with Ning Wei of China, Rhode stayed straight in the final for a total of 97 targets and the highest step onto the podium. The reigning world champion and two-time gold medalist of the 2010 ISSF World Cup season, Rhode is well on her way to competing for the USA at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Olympic Training Center Resident Athlete Caitlin Connor (Winnfield, La.) wowed the crowd with the only other straight 25 target final. Connor entered a shoot-off with five other shooters to earn one of four spots in the final. After just two targets, she claimed her place and finished with 96 targets for the silver medal. The bronze medalist was Slovakia’s Danka Bartekova with 95 total targets. Wei had difficulty with station four—dropping three targets in the final to finish fourth. USA teammate Jaiden Grinnell (Port Angeles, Wash.) had trouble in her second round of shooting, but bounced back to finish fourteenth with 69 targets.

Men’s Skeet has shot three rounds thus far and finish with finals on March 31. The USA’s Jon Michael McGrath (Tulsa, Okla.) is staying on the leaderboard with 74 out of 75 targets. He is currently tied with eight shooters. USA Shooting Team members Sergeant Vincent Hancock (Eatonton, Ga.) and T.J. Bayer (College Station, Texas) are in the middle of the field with 71 out of 75 targets. For more information please visit the ISSF Website.
