NJOSC: Holsopple Wins Women's 10m Air Rifle

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 1, 2011)

Emily Holsopple (Wilcox, Pa.) stole the show at the 2011 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships for Women’s 10m Air Rifle. Holsopple entered the final with 791 qualification points after two 400-point rounds. With a strong final of 103.1 points, she secured the gold medal and title of Junior Olympic Champion with 894.1 total points. Holsopple (pictured) is a freshman at the University of Kentucky, and shoots for UK’s rifle team. The silver medalist in today’s competition was Sarah Beard (Danville, Ind.) with 789 qualification points. Shooting the highest final, Beard marked 104.6 points in the final for a total of 893.6 points. Finishing with the bronze medal was Beard’s teammate at Texas Christian University, Sarah Scherer (Fort Worth, Texas). Scherer shot for 790 points and 103 points in the final for 893 total points. Holsopple and Beard are currently members of the National Junior Team and Scherer is a member of the National Rifle Team. All three will be shooting in Women’s 50m Rifle Three Position this weekend.

The high J2 of Women’s 10m Air Rifle was Denise Martin (Chewelah, Wash.) with a score of 788 qualification points. Martin also shot in the final and scored 103 points for a total of 891 points and a fourth place finish. The silver medalist of the J2 category was Samantha Bullard (Sanford, N.C.) with 779 points. Rachel Martin (Peralta, N.M.) finished with the bronze medal and 773 points.

In the J3 category, Mackenzie Martin of Fairhaven, Mass., rocked the competition with 780 total points. Martin also shot in the final and finished eighth with 99.5 points and 879.5 total points. At just 14 years old, she was by far the youngest competitor on the finals line. The silver medalist was Emily Cock (Silverton, Ore.) with 762 points and the bronze medal was awarded to Lana Fairbanks of Bismarck, N.D. with 753 points.
