World Cup Slovenia Preview

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 7, 2011)

The USA Shooting Team sent 15 talented shotgun shooters to compete in the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Cup Slovenia from July 8 to 15. This is the final leg of ISSF World Cup competition and one of only three remaining opportunities for the USA to pick up its final Men’s Double Trap and Men’s Trap quotas. The event begins with the Women’s Trap final on Saturday, July 7. Caitlin Weinheimer (Kerrville, Texas), Corey Cogdell (Eagle River, Alaska) and recent USA Shooting National Championship bronze medalist Rachael Heiden (Clinton, Mich.) will represent the red, white and blue. America will be watching as Men’s Trap athletes Lance Bade (Vancouver, Wash.), Staff Sergeant Ryan Hadden (Pendleton, Ore.) and Collin Wietfeldt (Hemlock, Mich.) take the stage gunning for a quota for Team USA. The Men’s Trap final will take place on Sunday, July 10. Two days later, the Men’s Double Trap trio of Sergeant Glenn Eller (Katy, Texas), Sergeant Jeffrey Holguin (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Staff Sergeant Joshua Richmond (Hillsgrove, Pa.) will shoot for an additional Men’s Double Trap quota. These three previously mentioned U.S. Army Marksmanship shooters swept the USA Shooting National Championship podium in the end of July and are ready to grab the final quota for the USA.

On Thursday, July 14, Alexander Chiang (Redwood City, Calif.), Amber English (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Connie Smotek (College Station, Texas) will take aim at the Women’s Skeet podium. The event finishes on Friday, July 15 with competition in the Men’s Skeet final. National Champion Sergeant Vincent Hancock (Eatonton, Ga.), National Championship silver medalist Frank Thompson (Alliance, Neb.) and Jon Michael McGrath (Tulsa, Okla.) will continue their quests to earn U.S. Olympic selection points. With over 589 competitors from 77 different federations, the competition will be fierce as Olympic quotas are on the line. For more competition information, please visit the ISSF Website.
