Szarenski Shines in Men’s 50m Free Pistol at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Smallbore

FORT BENNING, Ga. (May 31, 2012)

darylSergeant First Class Daryl Szarenski (WCAP/Seale, Ala.) demonstrated the poise of a three-time Olympian in the first match day of Men’s 50m Free Pistol at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Smallbore in Fort Benning, Ga.  Moments before he fired his first shot, Szarenski’s gun stopped functioning during sighters.

Knowing the exact problem—a faulty trigger, he disassembled the gun and solved the problem in the first fifteen minutes of the match.  With only one hour and forty-five minutes left to finish all 60 shots, Szarenski kept his cool and fired 552 match points to earn a spot in the final.  He shot the highest final of 99.1 match points, and is in good position headed into tomorrow’s match.

Sergeant First Class James Henderson (USAMU/Columbus, Ga.) and U.S. Olympic Training Center Resident Athlete Nick Mowrer (Butte, Mont.) tied at 554 match points.  Henderson, originally a service pistol athlete, shot 94.4 points in the final to Mowrer’s 94.1 points.

“Today was a struggle: it’s hot, humid, your body swells up and it’s hard to get your hand into the grip,” said Mowrer.  “I felt really strong in the beginning, but halfway through the match I had some confidence problems.  It took a lot of energy to get that back for the end of the match and the final.”

2008 Olympian Brian Beaman (Selby, S.D.) shot 548 match points and 98 points in the final.  He was followed by Intaek Seo (Crystal Lake, Ill.) with 549 and 94 in the final and John Zurek (Tucson, Ariz.) with 546 and 95.6 in the final.  Cody Owsley (Tonganoxie, Kan.) shot 547 and 93.8 in the final.  U.S. Olympic Training Center Resident Athlete Will Brown (Twin Falls, Idaho) finished in eighth with 546 and 93.3 in the final.  Olympic selection is based on the aggregate of three courses of fire and the top two finals.

The Men’s 50m Free Pistol Trials continue tomorrow with the second match at 9:00 a.m. ET.  USA Shooting will nominate one athlete to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team for Men’s 50m Free Pistol following the final on June 1 at 11:30 a.m. ET.
