Three-Time Olympian Szarenski Maintains Lead in Men’s 50m Free Pistol at U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Smallbore

SzarenskiMowrerAt the second day of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Smallbore, Sergeant First Class Daryl Szarenski (WCAP/Seale, Ala.) once again led the field in Men’s 50m Free Pistol.  From the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit’s Poole Range in Fort Benning, Ga., Szarenski fired 562 match points to create a five point gap between himself and the competition.

Szarenski struggled in the second half of the final, shooting 92 total points.  2008 Olympic Games teammate and bronze medalist Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.) turned it on today with 557 match points.  Turner, who shot 545 points in day one, rebounded with 95.7 points in the final.  Nick Mowrer (Butte, Mont.) remained steady with 555 match points and 94.3 points in the final.  Mowrer improved on his final score by two-tenths of a point, and has one more opportunity to improve if he makes tomorrow’s final. 

John Zurek (Tucson, Ariz.) and Sergeant First Class Thomas Rose (Columbus, Ga.) battled for fourth throughout the final.  Zurek shot 553 and 94.5 in the final to edge out Rose by two-tenths of a point.  Rose shot 551 match points and a final of 96.3.  2008 Olympian Brian Beaman (Selby, S.D.) finished in sixth with 553 match points and 93.8 in the final. Specialist Greg Markowski (Columbus, Ga.) shot 549 points and 94.6 points in the final and U.S. Olympic Training Center Resident Athlete Will Brown (Twin Falls, Idaho) shot 550 points and 90.6 in the final. 

Szarenski, a three-time Olympian, has a five-point lead in the Men’s 50m Free Pistol aggregate match total.  He is followed by Mowrer at 1109 points.  Turner is at 1102 points, while Beaman and Zurek are still in the hunt with 1101 and 1099 points respectively.  Brown is at 1096 points.  Tomorrow’s match and final will determine the owner of the lone Men’s 50m Free Pistol quota.  Olympic selection is based on the match aggregate plus the athletes’ top two finals. 

The Men’s 50m Free Pistol match begins at 8:00 a.m. ET and the final will be held at 10:30 a.m. ET, with awards immediately following.

June 7: Women’s 10m Air Pistol (no Olympic quota)

June 10: Men’s Standard Pistol (non-Olympic event)

June 10-11: Men’s Center Fire Pistol and Junior Men’s Sport Pistol (non-Olympic events)

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for all sports is a collaborative, three-way partnership between the U.S. Olympic Committee, the national governing bodies and the local organizing committees.  All athletes nominated to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team must be approved by the U.S. Olympic Committee.
