Parker Strengthens His Lead and Eyes the Last Olympic Nomination in Men’s 50m Rifle Three Position
FORT BENNING, Ga. (June 10, 2012)
Sergeant First Class Jason Parker’s (USAMU/Columbus, Ga.) first score of the day was perfection—400 points in the prone series of the Men’s 50m Rifle Three Position event at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Smallbore. Parker, the owner of the lone 400, gained three points on his competitors in Fort Benning, Ga. In the standing series, Parker fired 385 points to retain the lead and sealed the deal for the top spot in the final with 387 in kneeling for 1172 and a final of 97.9 points for 2537.4 aggregate points.
Specialist Joseph Hall (USAMU/Carrollton, Ga.), brother of 2012 U.S. Olympic Team nominee Jonathan Hall, finished with 1166 match points today for an aggregate total of 2524.5 and second place headed into tomorrow’s final match. Resident Athlete Matt Wallace (Fairbanks, Alaska) finished with 2522 points and is currently in third. Fellow Resident Athlete Tom Csenge (Colorado Springs, Colo.) tied Hall at 1166 points today and shot the highest final of 100.3 points for 2519.7 points. USAMU’s Sergeant Joe Hein (Mason, Mich.) posted marked improvement on his second day, shooting 95.5 points in the final for 2516.7 total points. Dempster Christenson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) has 2514.6 points in sixth place. Junior shooter Garrett Spurgeon (Canton, Mo.) made his second open final today as he topped Bryant Wallizer (Little Orleans, Md.) by just two-tenths of a point in a shoot-off. Spurgeon shot 96.4 points in the final and is the highest ranking junior shooter. Sergeant George Norton (USAMU/Columbus, Ga.) recovered from a disappointing first day with 1171 match points to enter the final one point behind Parker’s match score and is in eighth with 2414.8 points.
2012 U.S. Olympic Team nominee Sarah Scherer (Woburn, Mass.) led the way in Women’s 10m Air Rifle. Scherer, who finished third earlier in the week in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Smallbore in Women’s 50m Rifle Three Position, shot 398/400 points in the first match of today’s National Championship action. Olympic teammate Jamie Gray (Lebanon, Pa.) finished just one point behind Scherer for 397 points. U.S. Olympic Training Center Resident Athlete Amy Sowash (Richmond, Ky.) and Meghann K. Morrill (Boerne, Texas) shot 394 points.
In Men’s 25m Standard Pistol, Specialist Greg Markowski (USAMU/Columbus, Ga.) shot 577 match points for a nine point lead on the competition. USAMU teammate Specialist Thomas Rose (Columbus, Ga.) fired 568 and John Bickar (Tucson, Ariz.) is keeping chase with 564 points.
The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Smallbore and National Championships for Rifle/Pistol conclude tomorrow with competition in Men’s 50m Rifle Three Position, Women’s 10m Air Rifle, Men’s Center Fire Pistol, Men’s Standard Pistol and Junior Men’s Sport Pistol. The final nominee of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team will be nominated following the men’s 3-position final at 12:30 p.m. ET.
