Day 3 of USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle & Pistol

FORT BENNING, Ga. (June 5, 2013) -

If threre’s a power couple in American shooting – today that couple would be the Uptagraffts.

On Day 3 of competition at the USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle & Pistol, action in Men’s and Women’s Air Pistol and Prone Rifle got underway with Sandra and Eric Uptagrafft claiming two of the three Olympic sport finals on the day.

 2012 Olympian Sandra Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Ala.) is leading on the first day of Women’s Air Pistol with 386 points. She also won the finals event conducted on today’s qualification scores. In second place after Day 1 is National Junior Team member Lydia Paterson (Kansas City, Kan.) with an aggregate score of 382. Paterson also placed third in today’s final, and in third place is Paterson’s National Junior Teammate Darian Shenk (Annville, Pa.) who placed second in today’s final and ending the day with 381 points. Also tied for third with 381 points is Enkelejda Shehaj (Naples, Fla.), who placed fifth in today’s final.

In Men’s Prone Rifle, U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit shooter and two-time Olympian Eric Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Ala.) is leading on Day 1 of the event with 630.1 points. He was leading in qualification and the additional points he received for placing third in the final solidified his spot at the top.  In second place is newly-appointed National Team member Dempster Christenson (Sioux Falls, S.D.), who won the final and ended the day with an aggregate score of 629.5.  In third place is Justin Tracy (Farmington, N.Y.), who took second in the final and ended the day with an aggregate score of 628.

In the Men’s Air Pistol, we currently have a three-way tie for first place after Day 1 of Air Pistol competition. National Team member and recent World Cup USA gold medalist Will Brown (Twin Falls, Idaho) is continuing his winning ways in Fort Benning with his Day 1 aggregate score of 582. Also tied with an aggregate score of 582 are James Henderson (Midland, Ga.) and three-time Olympian Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.).  In second is Jay Shi (Phoenix. Ariz.) with 581 points and tied for third are Cody Owsley (Tonganoxie, Kan.) and Matthew Pueppke (Amenia, N.D.) with 578 points.

Utilizing new National Championship and U.S. team selection procedures for this event, finals were conducted in the Olympic events conducted today: Men’s and Women’s Air Pistol and Men’s Prone Rifle. New relays will be conducted tomorrow in these same events with a new, separate final and the National Champion in these events will be named on an aggregate of these scores plus additional points for placing in each day’s final (Eight points for first, seven points for second, six points for third and so on for all finals positions.) Leading Women’s Prone Rifle after Day 1 is National Team member Sarah Beard (Danville, Ind.)with a score of 623.5. In second place is Erin Lorenzen (Fort Wayne, Ind.) with 623 points and in third is National Junior Team member Deanna Binnie (Holsopple, Pa.) with 621.5 points.
