Rifle and Pistol World Cup Bangkok NEW MQS Opportunity

Rifle and Pistol World Cup Bangkok NEW MQS Opportunity

The ISSF recently announced the addition of World Cup Bangkok, Thailand March 1-9, 2016 to the competition schedule. World Cup Bangkok falls into the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Minimum Qualifying Score (MQS) eligible time window that expires March 31, 2016. To be eligible to compete in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, athletes must have earned the MQS in an ISSF sanctioned event between September 2015 and March 31, 2016.

Impact on Olympic Selection Process:

When the Olympic Team selection procedures were written and finalized in 2014, the final MQS opportunity was the World Cup Azerbaijan in August 2015. USA Shooting has received approval from the US Olympic Committee for an update to the selection procedures that includes the new World Cup Bangkok 2016 as it is a “Right to Compete” competition that falls within the Olympic qualifying window. Additionally, because of WC Bangkok, there will be a new Airgun Final Qualification Competition in May 2016: Athletes with an MQS, that did not finish in the top ten at WAG 2015, are eligible to compete. Any athletes equaling or exceeding the 10th place score from WAG 2015 will be invited to the June Final Airgun Selection Competition.

How to earn an MQS opportunity:

Airgun Rifle and Pistol MQS slots in WC Bangkok will be offered to the top two athletes from the Winter Airgun Championships 2015 (three day aggregate including any finals points) that do not already have an MQS. The MQS slots will be self-funded opportunities managed by USAS.

Smallbore Rifle and Pistol MQS slots in WC Bangkok will be offered to the top two athletes from a new MQS Competition January 6-10, 2016 in Colorado Springs. The course of fire will be two Qualification courses with a Final for the top-8 athletes. Ranking will be determined by the aggregate of the two courses of fire and any finals points earned.

To be eligible for an MQS slot, athletes must demonstrate the following scores at least once at

  • Winter Airgun Championships: WAR 392.0, WAP 370, MAR 595.0, MAP 568
  • January MQS Competition: M3P 1140, MPR 617.0, W3P 560, MFP 545, M RFP 565, WSP 560.

Olympic MQS Scores: WAR 392.0, WAP 365, MAR 595.0, MAP 563, M3P 1135, MPR 615.0, W3P 555, MFP 540, M RFP 560, WSP 555.
