Vern Hayden Named 2014 USA Shooting Volunteer of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (March 16, 2015)

USA Shooting would like to congratulate Vern Hayden (pictured center) of Tucson, Arizona for being named the 2014 Volunteer of the Year. Hayden has worked several USA Shooting Shotgun events over the years, ranging from World Cups to the National Junior Olympic Shotgun Championships.  Highlights from 2014 include refereeing for the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Cup USA on his home range in Tucson  and serving as the Chief Referee at the Fall Selection match in Tillar, Arkansas.

Vern is very involved with the Tucson Trap & Skeet club (TTSC) where he has served as a board member for over nine years. He enjoys planning and setting the future course for the club, as well as working with the youth programs at TTSC.

When asked what his favorite part of volunteering with USA Shooting was, Hayden stated, “The youth. I love watching the kids progress in their shooting careers and personal life.” He consistently mentioned the satisfaction he receives from instilling integrity into a young person’s life.

Hayden started volunteering in 2005 due to his grandson Luis Gloria’s involvement in skeet shooting. Without a doubt, the passion instilled in Hayden for the sport came from his grandson. Gloria, a member of our National Junior Team, speaks very highly of his grandfather by saying, “There is not a man in the world I would trade my grandfather for. I was blessed with the most amazing father figure, coach and friend a person could have dreamed of having in their life. He has heavily devoted countless hours to me and my desire to taste gold.” Hayden hopes to be there someday to see his grandson represent the United States of America in the Olympic Games.

“Vern is a key component in our volunteer pool,” said Pete Carson, USA Shooting’s Director of Competitions. He is highly knowledgeable and brings with him a positive attitude and amazing outlook. We are extremely grateful to have such a fantastic volunteer.”

Without a doubt, the success of USA Shooting events lies heavily on these volunteers; and we are honored to recognize Hayden for his commitment to the sport.
