NRA Foundation Assists USA Shooting with Shotgun Range Improvements

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (December 20, 2017)

The NRA Foundation is helping provide some much-needed upgrades to USA Shooting’s International Shooting Park courtesy of a $30,000 grant recently received.  The grant will help enhance training and competitive opportunities for America’s shooting team.

The grant will support improvements to the USA Shooting team's outdoor shooting ranges located 20 minutes south of Colorado Springs, Colorado, at the edge of the U.S. Army Fort Carson military base. The Park has four superimposed international-style skeet and bunker trap fields, shade shelters and a clubhouse.

Grants awarded to qualified programs from The NRA Foundation totaled nearly $34 million in 2016 and now approach $335 million in funding through 42,000 grants in support of the shooting sports.

The NRA Foundation grant will be specifically allocated to improve irrigation and drainage, increase competition and facility standards, facilitate disabled participant access, and incorporate a competition scoreboard to improve spectator appeal and participation.

Improving the range ultimately attracts additional new shooting sport participants and improves training and competition conditions for all athletes.  The range serves as the training grounds for USA Shooting’s resident shotgun athletes while currently hosting the National Championships, the National Junior Olympics, several other local competitions as well as grassroots camps and competition for ACUI and the Scholastic Clay Target Program.

“Enhancing and maintaining a range of this magnitude would not be possible without a lot of help from the shooting sports community,” said Jay Waldron, who serves as shotgun range manager in addition to his role as assistant shotgun coach. “We could not be more appreciative of the NRA Foundation for their willingness to invest in improving our range and creating a special place for the nation’s shotgun community.”

The new construction projects will begin in the first quarter of 2018.
