James started shooting at a local 4-H Club with his three younger brothers. His mom coached the club for many years and was also his first coach.

After a successful NCAA rifle career (USAS National team for men’s rifle) James spent several years involved in coaching (USAS Level 3 rifle coach, NRA Chief Range Safety Officer, ISSF Judge and EST Judge, (2007) and as a Graduate Assistant at Jacksonville State University, (2017-2018) Jacksonville State University Volunteer Coach) before picking up pistol shooting as an athlete.

It was James  who secured the first U.S quota spot in air pistol by winning gold at the 2018 Championship of the Americas in Guadalajara, Mexico. He has only been competing on the elite international pistol scene since 2018 when he made his World Championships debut. An NCAA All-American Rifle athlete in college, James will make his first Olympic appearance in air pistol at the Tokyo Games.

James enjoys riding motorcycles and has ridden his bike all the way from Alabama to the Sturgis rally in South Dakota. He also enjoys traveling, numerous shooting sports (3-gun, USPSA, Steel Challenge, Bullseye, CMP National Matches, high power rifle, and more), and spending time at home with this daughter Rylee.

Son of parents Creastia and Joe, and married to Sarah Hall, University of Kentucky Rifle Team Member from 2007-2011 and MidwayUSA Foundation Program Manager. He has three brothers Joseph, Jonathan, and Jacob who all compete in shooting sports.

Best Junior Advice: Shooting sports is just a game. It doesn't define you, just play the game to the best of your ability. You don't play the game for trinkets and medals. We keep playing for the great friendships and experiences we build along the way. Champions keep playing until they get it right.
