Rocky Mountain Shooters Post Strong Scores

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (February 3, 2012)

UptaThe second day of the Rocky Mountain Rifle Championships in Colorado Springs brought the top athletes to the firing line.  Highlighting the field was Sergeant First Class Eric Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Ala.) leading the way with 599 out of 600 match points in Men’s 50m Rifle Prone.  The Rocky Mountain
Rifle serves as an important training match for shooters gearing up for the 2012 competitive season.

Known for his prone abilities, Uptagrafft, a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU), was satisfied with his performance but noted that an indoor range eliminates the natural elements, thus scores theoretically should be higher. USAMU teammate Specialist Joseph Hall (Carrollton, Ga.) finished one point behind with 598 match points. Matt Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.) and Sergeant First Class Jason Parker (Columbus, Ga.) kept the pressure on, shooting 598 and 597 points respectively.

In Women’s 50m Rifle Three Position, Italy’s Petra Zublasing led the field with 585 points.  Resident Athlete Amy Sowash (Richmond, Ky.) stayed on target for 199 points in the prone series to finish with 582 points and the second position.  National teammate Jamie Gray (Lebanon, Pa.) also marked 582 points after the first match to stay in medal contention.

Finally, Italy’s Nicco Campriani fired a very impressive 396 points in the kneeling series of Men’s 50m Rifle Three Position to finish with a strong lead at 1186 points.  U.S. Olympic Team nominee Emmons started with a strong prone position, scoring 399 points and finished with 1182 points on the day.  Parker also made the top three in his second event with 1174 points after his first day of competition.

Competition resumes Saturday with the finals at 1 p.m. Mountain time with air rifle match on Sunday.
