Day 1 Results of National Championships for Rifle and Pistol

FORT BENNING, Ga. (June 3, 2013) -

 The weather wasn’t the only thing heating up today as the first day of competition at the USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle and Pistol officially commenced with action in the Women’s Air Rifle, Men’s Three-Position Rifle, Men’s Standard and Center Fire Pistol and Junior Sport Pistol events at the home of the US Army Marksmanship Unit – Fort Benning, Ga.

Utilizing new National Championship and U.S. team selection procedures for this event, finals were conducted in the Olympic events conducted today: Women’s Air Rifle and Men’s Three-Position Rifle. New relays will be conducted tomorrow in these same events with a new, separate final and the National Champion in these events will be named on an aggregate of these scores plus additional points for placing in each day’s final (Eight points for first, seven points for second, six points for third and so on for all finals positions.) Winning today’s Women’s Air Rifle final and leading after Day 1 is 2012 Olympian and defending National Champion Sarah Scherer (Woburn, Mass.) who placed first with 416 points. She won the final and still leads the day with the additional eight points she will receive for taking first in the final (424 total). Finishing second today was National Development Team member Amy Sowash (Richmond, Ky.). She placed fourth in the final, but with her score of 416.5 in qualification (the highest of the day) and the additional five points she receives for placing fourth in the final, she will enter Day 2 in second place (421.5 total). In third is USA Shooting National Team Member Sarah Beard (Danville, Ind.) who finished third in the final and will finish in third place day with 414.4 in qualification and six additional points for placing third (420.4 total).

In Men’s Three-Position Rifle, leading after Day 1 is U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) shooter and 2012 Olympian Jason Parker (Omaha, Neb.). Parker, shooting on USAMU home turf leads with 1170 points and won today’s final. In second after qualification and second in today’s final is National Development Team member Dempster Christenson (Rapid City, S.D.) who had 1164 points. In third in the day is Parker’s USAMU and 2012 Olympic teammate Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis.), who placed fourth in the final and fourth in qualification with 1163 points.

In Men’s 25m Junior Sport Pistol, National Junior Team member Alexander Chichkov (Temple Terrace, Fla.) is leading after Day 1 with 559 points. Taking second place is Timothy Steinberg with 557 points and in third place is Chichkov’s fellow Junior Team member Robert Wells (Pontotoc, Miss.) with 555 points. Competition in this event continues tomorrow with awards later that day.

Day 1 of Standard Pistol was owned by members of the USAMU. Greg Markowski (Columbus, Ga.) leads with 570 points. Brad Balsley (Uniontown, Pa.) finished in second with 567 points and Sean Ragay (Fort Benning, Ga.) finished in third with 557 points.

Balsley also shot a perfect 300 in the rapid-fire portion of the Men’s 25m Center Fire Pistol event. He leads the event into Day 2 with 592 points. His fellow leaders in Standard Pistol rounded out the Top 3: Markowski is in second with 586 points and Ragay in third with 582.

Competition continues tomorrow with National Championship titles awarded in Women’s Air Rifle, Women’s Air Rifle, Men’s Three-Position Rifle, Men’s Standard and Center Fire Pistol and Junior Sport Pistol. Find results from each of today’s events here:
