Turner Takes Another Title

FORT BENNING, Ga. (June 9, 2013) -

Jason Turner did it again.

The Rochester, N.Y. native took the National Champion title in every event he competed in at this year’s USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle & Pistol. Today he added the Free Pistol title to his 10m Air Pistol title he won earlier this week with 1114 points to win the event.

“First day of competition was rough, but today I did a lot better,” Turner said. “I just couldn’t focus. Today I was able to just execute my shot plan like I wanted to and it just turned out well I guess!”

Joining Turner on the Free Pistol podium is four-time Olympian Daryl Szarenski (Seale, Ala.) in second place with 1114 points too – the tie in points was broken when Turner bested Szarenski on center shots, 17 - 12. In third place is National Team member Brian Beaman (Selby, S.D.) with 1106 points. These three athletes will represent the United States at the upcoming World Cup in Granada, Spain in July.

On the Junior side, Alex Chichkov (Temple Terrace, Fla.) won gold with a score of 1049. Timothy Steinberg (Annapolis, Md.) with a score of 1046 and Paul Chong (Fontana, Calif.) finished third with a score of 1042.

Today wrapped the final day of competition with National Champion titles also awarded in Paralympic 10m Air Rifle Prone and Women’s 25m Sport Pistol.

National Paralympic Shooting Team member John Joss (Fort Benning, Ga.) claimed the Paralympic Air Rifle Prone event with 1257 points. Paralympic Shooting Development Teammates McKenna Dahl (Arlington, Wash.) and Robert Beach finished second and third respectively with 1252.8 and 1248.6 points.

In Women’s Sport Pistol, Teresa Meyer Chambers (Dearborn, Mich.) won the gold medal with 1170 points. Finishing second is 2012 and recently-crowned 10m Air Pistol Champion Sandra Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Ala.) with 1168 points. In third place is Brenda Silva (Snowflake, Ariz.) with 1157 points. Meyer Chambers, Uptagrafft and Silva will also compete in the World Cup in Granada, Spain. They along with Turner, Szarenski and Beaman have once again been nominated to the National Team.

Taking the Junior Women’s Sport Pistol title is Cindy Chung (Diamond Bar, Calif.) with an aggregate score of 1117. Finishing second is 10m Air Pistol silver medalist Lydia Patterson (Kansas City, Kan.) with 1102 points and in third is Isabel Macaulay (Concord, Mass.) with 1091 points.

The final scores in these events are a combined total of points including qualification scores from yesterday, today and additional points awarded for placing in each day’s final (eight additional points awarded for first, seven points for second, six points for third and so on for all finals positions) as laid out under USA Shooting’s new National Championship and World Cup team selection procedures for this Championship.
