U.S. Seventh and Eighth in Men’s Air Pistol at IPC World Cup

FORT BENNING, Georgia (June 6, 2014)

The USA Shooting Team had its largest contingent on the line today in the P1 (Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1) event at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Cup USA in Fort Benning and National Development Team members Mike Tagliapietra (Fon du Lac, Wisconsin, pictured foreground) and Shaun Tichenor (Brainerd, Minnesota) of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) both qualified for the Final, the first of World Cup Final of Tichenor’s career. Tagliapietra and Tichenor ended up finishing in seventh and eighth place respectively. Tagliapietra’s score of 552 in Qualification also set a new American Record.

Making his World Cup debut, Len Esparza (Cupertino, California) finished in 12th place and Kerry Morris (Grand Prairie, Texas) finished in 13th place.

Claiming his third pistol gold medal of this World Cup, Joackim Norberg of Sweden won the P1 event in decisive fashion – ten points ahead of his nearest competitor and tying the Finals World Record. The silver medal went to Von Zeuner Kohne of South Africa and bronze to Banbaatar Zandraa of Mongolia.

Also contested today was R7 (Men’s 50m Rifle Three Positions SH1) in which the U.S. had no competitors. Winning gold today was Martin Hall of Sweden. Doron Shaziri of Israel won the silver and Radoslav Malenovsky the bronze.

Tomorrow is the final day of this World Cup with P4 (Mixed 50m Pistol), R5 (Mixed 10m Air Rifle Prone SH2) and R6 (Mixed 50m Rifle Prone SH1) wrapping up the competition. Tichenor and Tagliapietra will once again take the line for the U.S. in P4. Jazmin Almlie-Ryan (Houston, Texas), Barbaro Ponce (Atlanta, Georgia) and Mariah Beckham (Daleville, Ala.) will compete in R5 and Nick Beach (Dresden, Ohio), along with USAMU teammates John Joss (Corsicana, Texas) and Josh Budd (Fort Benning, Georgia) will shoot R6.
